YUNA International Student Symposium 2019
"Communities: Margin and Mainstream"

On March 13, a group of 10 students from Shiu Pong College (SPC), led by College Master Prof. Benzi Zhang, delivered an informative and well-received presentation on "Communities: Margin and Mainstream" at the 2019 YUNA International Student Symposium held at New Asia College, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The YUNA International Student Symposium is an international joint event which has been held for over twenty years. This annual event provides a platform for students from Yale University (Yale) of the United States, New Asia College (NAC) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Shiu Pong College (SPC) of the University of Macau to share their opinions and research findings on various topics, as well as to engage in cultural exchange.

As in the previous years, SPC was invited to participate as one of the three presenting groups. This year, the SPC team decided to conduct a comparative study of local Chinese and Filipino Workers in Macau under the topic of "Communities: Margin and Mainstream". In three months, students closely worked together and tried their best on researching, conducting interviews, data analysis and writing reports with advice from Prof. Benzi Zhang (College Master),Prof. Joaquim Kuong (College Fellow of SPC), and Prof. Kenneth Leung (Former College Master).

In the symposium, five members of the SPC team presented first, introducing their findings and the three core aspects that were referred to in the comparison of the two groups, namely, the social-cultural aspect, the economic aspect and the socio-political aspect. The presentation attracted many questions from the floor, including students from Yale and NAC. They were then followed by four presentations by eight Yale students.

After listening to all presentations, participating SPC students said that they gained a lot from listening to presentations of the Yale students and found interesting differences among cultures. "This is a wonderful experience for me," Isuru (an SPC student presenter) said. "The ways they incorporated humor, the breadth of the topics they covered and the ways they handled questions raised by audience are all amazing."

At 5:00 p.m., the symposium came to a successful close.
