MCM College: Greater Bay Area Study Trip – Visit to Guangzhou
on 20-21 December 2019












In celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and 20th Anniversary of the Macao SAR, as well as increasing students’ understanding of the economic, social and cultural development of the city in the Greater Bay Area, Moon Chun Memorial College’s resident fellow, Ms Alice Hong led a group of 16 students to Guangzhou for a two-days corporate visit and cultural tour on 20-21 December, 2019. On the special day of 20 December, the group attracted local media attention and some students were interviewed by Guangzhou Daily and Guangzhou Nansha Youth Federation to share their feedback about the visit to Nansha and their feelings about the return of Macau to our motherland.

On the first day, the group visited Guangzhou's Nansha district. It is located at the center of the bay area and is designed as the national economic and technological development zone and national free trade zone, and is an important pivot in building the area into an international innovation and technology hub. Firstly, the group visited Nansha Innovation Valley which is a cultural and creative industry community for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau youth. With guided tour, they learnt about the development of Macau youth entrepreneurs, preferential policies for entrepreneurs, business incubator base application procedures etc.. Secondly, the group visited Zhaoke (Guangzhou) Oncology Pharmaceutical Limited and learnt about the industry development at Nansha and advanced technology related to biomedicine. After the visit, a seminar on “How to Seize the Development Opportunities of Greater Bay Area” was held with the management team, Two participants, Chen Zhitao and Geng Yi represented UM to deliver a short speech on this topic. The participants interacted actively with the management team and asked questions related to the career prospects at Greater Bay Area. Lastly, the group visited iFLYTEK and learnt about the intelligent speech analysis and artificial intelligence technologies, including speech synthesis, voice recognition, language translation, voiceprint recognition, face perception, natural language processing etc..

On the second day, the group explored the city of Guangzhou and visited Guangdong Museum which is a general museum of Cantonese nature, culture and history in Guangzhou. Afterwards, the group visited Guangdong Museum of Art which is an art museum based on Chinese modern art works and overseas Chinese art works. Last but not the least, the group visited Shamian which is the historic concession island that was established by the French and British after the Second Opium War. The students were impressed by the well preserved colonial architecture there.

After this study trip, the participants had a deeper understanding of the current development of the Greater Bay Area and expressed their interest in developing their career in the Greater Bay Area in the near future. Below are some of their feedback:
