The 5th Supernova Tournament is an annual debate tournament for novice debaters across Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Hosted by the English Debating Team in the Macau University of Science and Technology, the 5^th Supernova Tournament aims at exposing new members to debate against various local and regional debate societies and provides a foretaste of participating international tournament to new members. This year, it has attracted debaters from prestigious institutions such as University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, Sun Yet Sen University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, South China University of Technology, South China Agricultural University etc.

The advancing team was formed by Liu U Fai, a second-year student from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and a member of Lui Che Woo College (LCWC) and Liew Fook Khei, a first year student from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and a member of Shiu Pong College (SPC), advanced into the grand-final as the first breaking team with 13 points out of 15 points and debated with some of the best teams.

Other UM team members also had fruitful results. The team formed by Wu Chun Xuan, a first-year student from Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC) with Yeung Tsz Ching, also a first-year student from Faculty of Education (FED) and a member of Shiu Pong College (SPC) broke into the quarter final with 3th highest breaking team point. Besides that, the team formed by Shum Lok Yee, a second-year student from the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Cheng Yu Tung College (CYTC) and Victoria Zhang, a first-year student from the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Man Wan Kei College (MLC), broke into the quarter final. Meanwhile, Liew Fook Khei, was entitled the overall best speaker in the tournament, while Liu U Fai was announced the 5^th overall best speaker.
