Seminar talk at Shiu Pong College – Neither hearing nor not-hearing: Living with a not-so-visible disability

On September 18, 2019, Professor Cheung Shu Fai of the Faulty of Social Sciences was invited to deliver a seminar talk on “Neither hearing nor not-hearing: Living with a not-so-visible disability”. Around 50 students participated in this seminar.

Professor Cheung shared his personal story with the students. He has been hard of hearing since he was a child. As a former student with disability, and now a teacher and a father with disability, he has difficulties in communicating verbally, enjoying music, hearing fire alarm, hearing baby cries, etc.. However, there are also something good. That is, he can remain calm in a noisy environment and is good to take care of crying babies. He then summed up that having a disability is a normal thing. Normal in the sense that all people, either themselves or people close to them, could have disabilities. It is normal to face the disabilities and live with it, adapt to it.

The accessible infrastructure on the UM campus was also introduced in the seminar. Elevators have audio announcement systems and braille signs on buttons. Residential colleges have rooms designed specifically for students with disabilities. Like what Professor Cheung mentioned, he did not give an inspirational talk, but a talk that can raise our awareness of those invisible or not-so-visible disability-related issues around us.
