MCM College: Promoting “Anti-Adversity Action” During Anti-Epidemic Period

In order to gather MCMCers’ positive energy and go through difficult times together during the anti-epidemic period, Moon Chun Memorial College initiated a series of “Anti-Adversity Action” between 11th -28th February. On 8th February, a college student, Bill King initiated the thought of creating a short video to support Wuhan under the encouragement and support of the resident fellow. Within two days, he successfully called upon his classmates and college friends to create a 3 minutes video, called “Never Give Up”. (http://my.polyv.net/front/video/view?vid=71c9e517c0ba3a283131f48f788f10e8_7) Bill King hoped that the compatriots in Wuhan can fight against the conronovirus together and do not give up after receiving the blessings from the UM students all over China.

To further support Wuhan, the resident fellow organized the first anti-adversity action on 11th February and called upon other college students to record a short video of “Never Give Up” gesture dance by themselves and share it in the Wechat Moments as an action of their support. The “Never Give Up” lyrics, “A group of people keep walking along the road, supporting each other……” fully expressed the college’s spirit of watching and helping one another during difficult times. This campaign has gained support from a lot of students. They started self-learning and self-recording of the gesture dance at home, and then sent out the short video to support Wuhan from different places in China, including Macau, Guangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Hebei, Zhejiang, Shangdong, Yunnan, Heilongjiang etc.

On 17th February, the resident fellow initiated the second “Anti-Adversity Action”, called “Grateful Life with You”. This action encouraged the college students to feel with their hearts the people, experiences and things in their life that make them feel grateful during the anti-epidemic period. By joining “Grateful Story Challenge” in their Wechat Moments or leaving their messages on the “Gratitude Board” shown on MCMC wechat public account, the college students shared their positive energy of “Gratitude” with the people around them. In response to this action, the college’s social worker also conducted an online workshop on 26th February. Through sharing “Gratitude” message and stories, she helped the college students to relieve stress and focus on the positive things in life. Below are some college students’ messages on the “Gratitude Board”:

“During the class suspension period, my parents worked at home while taking care of me. Usually, I don’t have much time to spend with them. These days, they tried their best to take good care of me. I am grateful for the delicious food and good learning environment they created for me at home.” - Tissier Gao

“Thanks to our lovely MCMCers who had lived on the 4th floor. As a resident who is staying alone at the college, the happiest thing for me every day is chit-chatting with you all. Our mutual support and encouragement makes lonely time pass faster. I hope that the epidemic will be over soon. Looking forward to seeing you all again.” - Quin Song

“I am truly thankful to all the staff of our college, especially the porters. Without them, we will not be kept safe. For the sake of our safety, they work very hard till late at night. Therefore, whenever we see them, we can greet them and thank them to show our gratitude.” - Morning Tam

“I want to say thank you to all my professors here. In order to achieve the goal of keeping students learning amid class suspension, they prepare the classes for us around the clock. Some of them are staying far away from Macau (e.g. Portugal), but they still deliver the classes to us regardless of the time lag. Therefore, I am really grateful for all of them.” - Alice Lu

“I would like to thank the Macau Government for taking the citizens’ benefits into consideration. They bought the face masks for us in a timely manner and implemented effective plans to ensure sufficient supply of face mask to every citizen of Macau.” – Ray Ao

“The people whom I am grateful to are those angels in white nurses who are fighting against the conoravirus at the frontline. Their mission is to take care of the patients and protect the country. When facing crisis, they chose the country without hesitation. May the epidemic end soon. May they return early.” - Yoga Zhai
