MCM College: “Screaming” Halloween Night 2019

The evening of 31st October was cool, dry and unassuming. Students huddled together in spooky costumes waiting to have their faces painted before parading as gruesome ghouls and other zombie-like ‘walking dead’. Aye, playing a part during Halloween is an unforgettable part of the MCM College experience. It's the third major event for the House Association (HA). All the HA members, resident tutors, resident assistants and floor representatives beamed “everyone gets overwhelmingly excited and dresses up to have a great time”.

In today’s context, Halloween conjures up activities such as ‘trick-or-treating’, carving pumpkins, and sporting costumes on October 31 of each year. In fact, rituals dated back to the times of Samhain, where ancient Celtic people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off ghosts and evil spirits. 1st November was declared a special day to revere all saints, officially known as All Saints Day. Eventually, kinfolk adopted traditions of the festival of Samhain. It subsequently became known as All Hallows Eve, and finally ‘Halloween’ as we know it today.
