Seminar talk at Shiu Pong College
"The Licit and Illicit Nature of Parallel Trading"

On October 23, 2019, Professor Ngo Tak Wing, from the Department of Government and Public Administration of the Faulty of Social Sciences, was invited to deliver a seminar talk entitled “The Licit and Illicit Nature of Parallel Trading”.

Professor Ngo introduced the varieties of parallel trade. They are: occasional traders, professional traders and semi-organized informality, professional couriers and organized informality with closed networks, and large syndicates and organized informality with open networks. He then explained the misconceptions of parallel trading. Some people may think that parallel trading is small quantity, informal and individual. In fact, it is large quantity, highly coordinated and syndicate. Professor Ngo also shared his research experience at Pogranichny (a place near China-Russia border) bus station.

Professor Ngo vividly expounded the misconceptions and the truth of parallel trading. Many students said that the seminar was rich in content and thought-provoking, and that they gained a lot from it.
