Choi Kai Yau College 5th Anniversary Fellow’s Talk Series:
“Do’s and Don’ts in Thailand” (22 January 2019)

On 22 January 2019, a talk titled “Do’s and Don’ts in Thailand” had been held at the Dining Hall of the Choi Kai Yau College (W12). The speaker is Dr. Chanthika Pornpitakpan, associate professor of the Faculty of Business Administration, who is also the non-resident fellow at the College. Although it is the third time of re-running the talk in the same topic, the event still attracted over 150 participants due to its interesting content.

Thailand has been one of the hot tourist spots in Southeast Asia. It is famous for its beaches, temples, massage therapy, and durian, attracting tourists from different parts of the world along the year. While introducing Thailand, students can enrich their travelling experience; what’s more, they can learn the Thai history and culture, so as to develop one of the competency goals as proposed by the residential college system: Citizenship with Global Perspectives. As Dr. Pornpitakpan is from Thailand, she introduces Thai history and culture from the local perspectives, explains the etiquettes for visiting temples, and even demonstrates how to greet Thai locals from different positions in the family hierarchy. Students enjoyed the talk, and they even tried out the greeting gestures on their own.

To celebrate its 5th anniversary, Choi Kai Yau College has organized a series of commemoratory activities, including the fellow’s talks, master lectures, Dunhuang artistic exchange, and evening parties. In the fellow’s talk series, the College is very thankful to have the support from our non-resident fellows, who shared/will share their professional knowledge with our students along the year, fostering the liberal arts education and enhancing students’ soft skills.
