UM English Debating Team emerged as grand-finalist of the 5th UM Novice Debating Championship

The University of Macau’s English Debating Team (EDT) successfully advanced to out rounds at the 5th UM Novice Debating Championship. Four of the eight participating UM teams successfully broke into the out rounds and one of them even broke into the grand-final with their stellar performance.

UM Novice Debating Championship is an annual debate tournament for novice debaters across Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Hosted by the English Debating Team in the University of Macau, UM Novice Debating Championship aims at exposing new members to debate against various local and regional debate societies and provides a foretaste of participating international tournament to new members. This year, it has attracted 56 teams and debaters from prestigious institutions such as University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, South China University of Technology, South China Agricultural University etc.

The advancing team was formed by Liu U Fai, a sophomore from the Faculty of Science and Technology and Lui Che Woo College, and Liew Fook Khei, a freshman from the Faculty of Science and Technology and Shiu Pong College, entered the grand-final and debated with some of the best teams.

Other UM team members also had fruitful results. The team formed by Marco San Pedro Lalicon, a third-year student from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) and a member of Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC) and Luo Yi, a first-year student from the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Cheong Kun Lun College (CKLC), advanced to the quarter-final. Meanwhile, Pan Ranyan, a first-year student from the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC) and Au Lok Cheung, also a first-year student from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and a member of Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC), made it to the top 20 on the speaker tab.
