MLC Activity Highlights: Lunch Seminar Series – A Road toward Fast Charging Li-ion Batteries
On 27 February 2019, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College invited Prof. Yuxin Tang, Assistant Professor from Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering at the University of Macau to give a lunch seminar entitled “A Road toward Fast Charging Li-ion Batteries”. Prof Tang began his talk by introducing the development and applications of batteries. He demonstrated that a simple batteries can be constructed by inserting two metal nails into citrus fruits that contain citric acid. Then he moved on to talk about the advantages of lithium ion batteries (LIB) over other materials, he said that the high energy density of LIB is one of the main advantages. Therefore LIB is particular suitable for mobile phones as it is lightweight. Lastly he explained the needs and challenges for developing ultrafast charging LIB, especially in the electronic vehicles market.
