MCMC: Cultural Exchanges between Lusophone-Countries across UM’s College Community

    MCM College, in collaboration with CKP College and CKY College organised a special Lusophone festival on Saturday evening, 9th November, 2019, from 6-10pm. The cultural event which aims to strengthen ties among students from Portuguese-speaking Countries and their peers across UM’s collegiate community, by encompassing unique characteristics of lusophone culture through dance, gastronomy, language, and music.

    “A Festa Lusofônia” featured a gala performance by students: Traditional Portuguese dance from CKP College; students from Mozambique presented an energetic mix of local dance rhythms, folk music and “sprightly, bouncy, dance repertoire; students from São Tomé e Principe performed the ússua and socopé rhythms of; and ‘Batuque’ a Cape Verdean tradition of celebrating life with drumming, singing and dancing. Other student groups from Brazil, Portugal, Macau, Guiné Bissau and Cabo Verde showcased their gastronomic skills and traditional costumes.


    College Masters, Prof. Kit Thompson (MCMC) and Prof. Lau Yun Tung, Dean of Student Affairs Office, Paul Pang, and Professors from Department of Portuguese (FAH) José Lino Pascoal and Gabriel Antunes de Araujo were among 150 enthusiastic revellers celebrating the rich cultural diversity which is one of five significant core competencies of UM’s community and peer education model to improve students’ perception of each other by interaction ‘through and between cultures’.
