UM Team awarded with Merit at Deloitte Tax Championship 2019

The National Contest of the 2019 Deloitte Tax Championship was held in Chengdu on 25-27 October 2019 under the theme Leading to success: be bold, be creative, attracting 100 young participants from top universities in China. The University of Macau (UM) team with four accounting students from the Faculty of Business Administration was awarded with Merit.

This year, the competition attracted students from 66 universities in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The competition consisted of three rounds and the UM team qualified for the final to compete with the other twelve teams from top universities.

The preliminary contest held in July was an online, multiple-choice quiz testing students' knowledge of China tax and related practices, as well as the logical thinking prowess. For the second round in August, students were required to analyze simulated business cases and submit written reports while in the final contest, students had to present solutions and deliver short speeches on a given topic, focusing on their knowledge of international tax and advanced technology, and also English proficiency.

This 4-month long competition was a great experience for our accounting students including CHEN Ziyan, WANG Xueyi, ZHAO Jiayi, and BU Ziyou as they redefined the spirit of "leading to success, be bold and creative" in their own ways.

Professor Desmond YUEN, the head of department of Accounting and Information Management and the supervisor of the UM team, believed that the annual event would be a focus on professional training and education as well as increasing awareness of tax matters among academic institutions, educators and students in China.
