MCM College’s Buddy System and International Student Gathering, 2019

On Wednesday, 28th August, 2019, MCM College organised a student gathering in Fellows’ Salon to warmly welcome a large cohort of international students from across Europe (Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany), Africa (S. Tomé e Príncipe), and South-East Asia (Korea and China). International students bring a supreme wealth of ideas and innovative solutions to the college every year. Cross-cultural exchanges creates an environment for more global exposure and maturity for local Macau and Mainland Chinese students in preparation for the future studies or travels overseas.

This semester, the college welcomes the following students:
· Marvin Reineke (Germany),
· Kobe Stassen (Belgium),
· Nina Visser (The Netherlands),
· Maria Inês Soares Lopes Fernandes Morais (Portugal), Diana de Carvalho Coelho Jorge (Portugal),
· Zhou Xiaotong, Lai Mengping, Huang Chengshi, Zhang Hongyi and Guan Jinhui from China.

The Buddy Programme at MCM College, now operating in its fifth year, facilitates local students in developing a deeper understanding of different cultures and traditions beyond Macau and China. It also allows them to interact with different people and in turn develop a more solid competence and perspective in becoming citizens with a broader global insight. This will also provide more incentives for MCM College students to consider joining the diverse range of international summer programmes organised by Student Affairs Office.

One of the key factors envisioned in the College’s Buddy Programme is students learning to co-exist through social and educational interaction such as: sharing meals, living ‘shoulder-to-shoulder’, and caring for one another through mutual respect and consideration and tolerance. The programme, with the support of community and peer education, aims equips students with the capacity to live and adapt overseas wherever exciting future employment opportunities call.
