Getting started with online/blended classes

Hope everyone is keeping well during this critical time.
In view of the postponement of classes, CTLE is working closely with different units at UM to coordinate and facilitate online and blended learning until we all meet again on campus.
It’s crucial that we pay attention to official announcements of teaching and learning arrangements during this period of class suspension. CTLE will publish relevant demo videos and manuals in due course. Meanwhile, here is some information that can help you get a head-start on preparing to teach online or teaching in a blended mode:

How do I get started with Zoom?
How do I schedule a Zoom meeting for each course in UMMoodle?
You can schedule meetings in your course by adding a Zoom activity. Then set up the configure the meeting date/time, duration etc. You can refer to a video tutorial or page.

How do I know if my audio and video are clear?
Check your audio and video settings

How do I run lectures online?
You’ll need to know how to navigate the Zoom app, which is quite simple.
How do I conduct discussions on Zoom? Is it all verbal, or is text available?
Yes, we can certainly conduct discussions, spoken or textual.
Can we share our computer screen?

Can I make a recording of a Zoom meeting?
Yes, we can record the meeting as a video on our computer. Please check out the guide here or video tutorial “Recording a Zoom meeting.”

Can I upload the video to UMMoodle?
Yes, however, it will most like need to be compressed to a smaller file, 200 MB or less.

Five ways to make the most of UMMoodle

SEND IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTSAnnouncements are important for keeping students in your course on track. Here’s a video tutorial “How to post news in Announcements in UMMoodle” [Note: students cannot reply to messages posted in Announcements.]

UPLOAD TEACHING MATERIALSProduce voice-over on existing PPT slides (many of us currently teach with PPT slides). The PowerPoint files can be uploaded directly to Moodle, or converted into a video and then uploaded. Here’s a video tutorial showing the steps.

CREATE ONLINE DISCUSSIONS Students can communicate with you and each other using discussion forum or text-based chat. Here’s a video tutorial on how to add a discussion to your course.Teachers and students can now record short videos (200 MB max) directly into forums and assignments. Here’s a video tutorial, “Record Audio and Video in Moodle 3.5”. [Note: iPhone users are advised to use the Moodle app (video) to record videos directly into forum posts and assignments.]

COLLECT STUDENTS’ WORK WITH ASSIGNMENTSAssignments work well for a variety of tasks and activities, including collecting essays, reflections, project work, video recordings, and individual/group presentations. To check texts for plagiarism, turn on the Veriguide function or use a Turnitin activity. The maximum upload size is usually 200 MB.

DELIVER LECTURES ONLINEDeliver live lectures online with video conferencing software, Zoom. Zoom meetings can be created in UMMoodle for up to 100 students. Academic staff need to register for a Zoom license at account.icto.umac.mo. Here’s a video tutorial on how to schedule a Zoom meeting for each course.
