Abstract:

Pedagogical innovation is often linked to teacher professional development (TPD) which relies on teacher understanding of what is proposed, how the innovation can be enacted, and ways in which an innovation might be effectively adapted to local conditions. In this presentation, I first summarize a school-based TPD study which encouraged teachers to re-think discussions intended to improve student reading comprehension. I then discuss some of the issues around attempt to track teacher ‘understanding’ of the innovation and how teachers’ developing understanding was important for gaining insights into the on-going TPD process. I conclude by summarizing a few key points for research-teacher collaborations which attempt to encourage pedagogical innovation through TPD.
