MCM College: Translation as Kaleidoscope
MCM College held a special workshop for all aspiring students interested in creative writing and poetry in Fellows’ Salon, featuring poets: Ravi Shankar and Eleanor Goodman, who are here in Macau for the annual Asia Pacific Writers & Translators Conference, 2019.
Shanker is a poet, translator and professor of poetry, based in Connecticut, USA. He is the founding editor and executive director of Drunken Boat (which he himself describes as "one of the world's oldest electronic journals of the arts"). He has penned and edited ten books and chapbooks of poetry, including What Else Could it Be (2015); Deepening Groove (2010), winner of the National Poetry Review Prize; Instrumentality (2004), a finalist for the Connecticut Book Award; and Autobiography of a Goddess (2015), a collection of translations from the Tamil with Priya Sarukkai Chabria. His editorial projects include W. W. Norton's Language for a New Century: Contemporary Poetry from Asia, the Middle East & Beyond, co-edited with Tina Chang and Nathalie Handal. He was awarded the Pushcart Prize, as well as multiple fellowships, and performs widely.
Goodman is a writer and translator, and a Research Associate at Fairbank Center, Harvard University. She spent a year in Beijing on a Fulbright Fellowship. Her book of translations, “Something Crosses My Mind” (by Wang Xiaoni) was awarded the 2013 PEN/Heim Translation Grant. Goodman is ‘artist in residence’ at the American Academy in Rome, and recipient of ‘Henry Luce Translation Fellowship’ from the Vermont Studio Center, and winner of the International Merit Award in Poetry from the Atlanta Review. |
