SPC organized Guangzhou Tour to Explore Chinese History and Culture

To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th Anniversary of the Macao SAR, the Shiu Pong College organized a team of 30 teachers and students went to Guangzhou from October 26th to 27th. The tour was headed by the College Fellow Professor Yin Degang from Faculty of Social Sciences and the Resident Fellow Ms. Ginger Chan.

They visited Guangdong Museum, The Peasant Movement Training Institute (農民運動講習所), The Memorial Museum of Generalissimo Sun Yat-sen’s Mansion ( 孫中山大元帥府紀念館), Yuexiu Park (越秀公園), Shamian Island (沙面島) and The Whampoa Military Academy (黃埔軍校). Students were very much impressed by the cruelty of war and the patriotism of national heroes, as well as the older generation of leaders’ struggle, dedication and sacrifice of becoming a new country.

This activity provides an opportunity for students to explore heritage sites and museums. It enriches students’ understanding of Chinese history and culture, and strengthens their sense of pride and identity with their motherland.

Students have written reflections on the trip, in which they acknowledged learning a great deal. Here are some quotes from their reflections.

“I learnt a lot on the hardships that China had to go through to become the giant they are today.” (Isuru Chinthana Gunaratne)

“Through joining this tour, I had deeper understanding of the history of China. I was inspired to think about a question: why do we have our present life? ” (Lui Kwan Yi)
