Dear colleagues and students,

The recent outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in West Africa are found uncontrolled and there are signs of cross-border transmission. The World Health Organization has listed the incident as "Public Health Emergency of International Concern". In response to this, Health Bureau and Public Security Police Force of the Government of Macao S.A.R. have strengthened the preventive and control measures at major ports.

Ebola virus disease is a serious, acute viral disease. Symptoms include fever, extreme weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat, followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function. In severe cases, internal and external bleeding, as well as death may occur.

Health Bureau reminded residents to pay attention to the following if planning to travel to the outbreak regions:
  • When staying in the outbreak regions, pay attention to personal hygiene and environmental hygiene, always follow the correct procedure to wash hands;
  • Avoid contacting animals and their corpses;
  • Do not consume meat that is not fully cooked; peel and wash fruits and vegetables before eating;
  • Avoid visiting hospitals or families with patients at home;
  • Avoid contacting suspected patients and their blood or body fluid, as well as items that may be contaminated by their blood or body fluid;
  • if you have contacted patients' blood or personal items accidentally, wash hands immediately and seek medical assistance if needed;
  • If you have travelled to the outbreak regions and suffered from symptoms like fever, diarrhea, vomiting, rash, bleeding, etc. within 21 days after returning to Macao, seek medical assistance immediately and inform doctor about your travel history.
