UM English Debating Team emerged as grand-finalist of Beijing Debate Open 2019
The University of Macau’s English Debating Team (EDT) successfully advanced to out rounds at the Beijing Debate Open 2019 Novice Category. Four of the participating UM teams successfully broke into the out rounds and one of them even broke into the grand-final with their stellar performance.
Beijing Debate Open 2019 is an annual debate tournament and workshop for novice debaters and experienced debaters across Asia. Hosted by the English Debating Society of University of Petroleum, Beijing Debate Open 2019 aims at providing structure training and lectures to participants and also provide a platform for them to debate. This year, it has attracted 88 teams and debaters from prestigious institutions such as Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Korean Universities, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, South China University of Technology, South China Agricultural University etc.
The advancing team was formed by Yeung Tsz Ching, a first-year student from the Faculty of Education and a member of Shiu Pong College, and Wu Chunxuan, also a first-year student from the Faculty of Business Administration and a member of Stanley Ho East Asia College, who entered the grand-final and debated with some of the best teams. Other UM team members also contain fruitful results. The team formed by Hoi Chon Kit, a first-year student from the Faculty of Education and a member of Cheng Yu Tung College, and Zhang Zhi Qing, a first-year student from the Faculty of Business Administration and a member of Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College, advanced to the Semi-finals.
