Bulletin
Dear UM students,

Reports in relation to new telephone scam have been lodged with the Judiciary Police. Several university students in Macau have been lost over million RMB . Again, we would like to remind the public to stay vigilant against telephone deception.

Con artists' modus operandi:
1. A phone number "00" & "+" appears on the victim's mobile phone;
2. The victim answers and hears a voice message that the victim has mailed the parcel, which the immigration officers in Mainland China has to hold for some issues.
3. The scammers pretend the immigration officers in Mainland China, and asked the bank information of the victim, and request the victim to transfer the money in the "safe account" and claimed for prevention of crime.

Preventive measures:
1. Stay wary and do not disclose your personal details to anyone should you receive any unsolicited phone calls;
2. The number appears on your phone may not be real as perpetrators can alter caller IDs using computer software. They change the number to make it more convincing;
3. Government departments will never instruct their citizens to make a bank transfer over the phone;
4. Safeguard your personal information. Criminals obtain your information via illegal means and use them to commit fraud or other crimes;
5. If you encounter telephone s or other crimes, please contact the police at once;
6. If you wish to make an enquiry about telephone deception or report scam to the Judiciary Police, please call us on our switchboard 2855 7777 or our crime report 993.
