UM’s fourth batch of SME training courses now open for registration

The University of Macau (UM) has launched a series of training courses for owners and employees of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Macao to help these businesses survive the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The six courses in the first, second, and third batches were very well received and the quotas were quickly filled. UM is now launching two new SME training courses, namely Big Data and Technology Innovation, as well as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and Smart City. Both courses were originally priced at MOP 3, 900, and are now offered for free. They will be open for registration from 3 June to 9 June.

These courses focus on how SMEs can apply new technologies in their daily operation. They are co-organised by UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City (SKL-IoTSC), and Centre for Continuing Education (CCE). The FST and the SKL-IoTSC have strong research capacity and have been serving the local community with first-class academic programmes and cutting-edge research, while the CCE is dedicated to providing quality training courses and teaching support services for the general public. Through these two courses, UM hopes to help SME owners and employees learn more about the latest trends in technology and how they can apply the new technologies to improve their thinking skills and make better business decisions. The courses will also discuss the SAR government’s plan to develop Macao into a smart digital city and how going high-tech might be the way forward for SMEs against this backdrop.

The course ‘Big Data and Technology Innovation’ will teach participants how to use database management tools and data analysis methods, as well as how to apply big data in marketing, through case studies. The other course, titled ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Smart City’, will discuss how AI and IoT can drive the development of traditional industries and promote economic diversification and sustainable development in Macao. Covering topics such as smart city development, smart energy, smart transport, smart coastal city development, and disaster prevention and control, the course aims to help SME owners and employees learn more about Macao’s development trends so they can make better business decisions.

The training courses will be open for registration from 3 June to 9 June. They will begin on 16 June and are expected to be completed in early July. Quotas are limited, and applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis. Macao identity card holders who are working in a SME (proof of employment is required for registration) will be given priority for admission.
