Organized by the University of Macau Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the UM Language and Culture Day 2019 continues to feature “Value your own language; Embrace others’ cultures” with a series of exciting activities including the “International Language and Culture Fair”, “Cultural Runway” and various cultural activities and language workshops. The event aims at preserving mother languages and promoting linguistic and cultural diversity. Register now to get a free local style egg sandwich!

13:00 – 15:00
International Language and Culture Fair | E21A Outdoor Square

A series of culture-specific game booths provide participants with a learning-with-fun experience, and an opportunity to taste traditional food and drink from various parts of the world. There are also cultural performances and opportunities to show off your mother language or the language you are good at.

Lazy Sounds? Speak Proper Cantonese! | E21A-G040

Do you have any friends who cannot speak proper Cantonese? Lazy sound is a phenomenon of misreading. All languages in the worlds have been lazy sounded at different levels. Let’s come and find out the lazy sounds in Cantonese in this workshop.

English Dubbing Studio | E21A-G039

Have you ever translated film subtitles? In this workshop, we will provide some clips of English films or TV series. Participants will have a go at translating the subtitles.

Fala Português? – Let’s learn the basics! | E21A-G038

If you were born in Macau or came to study or work, don’t you think that you should learn some basic Portuguese?

Developing Skills in News Writing | E21A-G040

This workshop takes a process approach to developing skills in writing a news report, including building a clear structure, collecting useful information and developing a concise writing style.

Self-Introduction in Japanese | E21A-G039

Learning Japanese greetings, self-introductions and numbers. The workshop is not in a lecture style. By orally interacting with each other, participants will be able to master the Japanese words and phrases used in the dialogue. Participants will practice using numbers to ask for each other’s phone numbers.

Two movies will be shown at the Black Box Theatre -- “Macanese in Macau – Renewing Identity” & “Language – Lives in Portuguese”
