UM English Debating Team won the 2nd Runner-up at the 2019 China Open

The University of Macau (UM) English Debating team successfully advanced to out rounds at the 2019 China Open. The advancing team, formed by Lau Kak Chi Cora Margaret (Cora), a sophomore student from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and a member of Shiu Pong College, and Liang Xinyuan (Sally), also a sophomore student from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and a member of Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College, entered the grand-final and debated with some of the best teams, ultimately placing as 2nd runner-up in the Grand Final. At the China Open, UM EDT teams competed with strong teams from renowned institutions such as Shantou University, Zhongshan University and Fudan University etc.

Founded in 2009, China Open is an annual English debate tournament held jointly by East China University of Science and Technology and China Open Organising Committee with six preliminary rounds, attracting 100 teams to compete in the tournament.

Aside from the team formed by Cora and Sally, there was other team was formed by Zhou Yongyi, a sophomore student from the Faculty of Social Science and a member of Lui Che Woo College, and Wan Yingjia, a sophomore student from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and a member of Cheong Kun Lun College both placed top 50 out of 200 participants in the speakers tab too.
