Over 200 undergraduates of top mainland universities applied for “The Summer Camp for Outstanding Undergraduate Students of Mainland Universities” which was jointly organized by Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) of the University of Macau (UM). After a rigorous selection, 82 outstanding students were admitted to the summer camp which was held between 13 and 20 July. The participants expressed that the summer camp was fruitful with a well-balanced integration of academic theories and practical applications, which broadens their postgraduate research perspectives. The students also enjoyed visiting the world heritage sites in Macao.

In the opening ceremony of the summer camp, Prof. Chuxia DENG, Dean of FHS and Prof. Zikang TANG, Director of IAPME warmly received the outstanding undergraduate students of Peking University, Zhejiang University, Dalian University of Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, Central South University, Jilin University, Chongqing University, Lanzhou University, etc. Prof. Deng and Prof. Tang also introduced the history and the latest developments of UM as well as the future prospects of the two faculties. The Graduate School of UM also provided some information of the postgraduate admission and the scholarships of UM for the students.

The one-week summer camp programme featured thematic lectures hosted by UM professors, covering a wide range of topics, including biomedical sciences, applied physics and materials science. The participants had intensive interaction with the professors and postgraduate students of UM through participating in the research work of different research teams related to their respective research interests. During the laboratory sessions, the participants had the chance to operate some state-of-the-art equipment, which has strengthened their understanding of the research topics. In addition, they have learnt more about the college life of the postgraduate students at UM. Accompanied by the UM professors and students, the participants enjoyed a scenic campus tour to understand the history, latest developments, academic achievements and research environment of UM. Besides, the participants also joined a local tour to visit the world heritage sites in Macao, through which they experienced the profound history and culture of Macao.

The participants indicated that the summer camp not only enriched their knowledge but also served as a platform for strengthening the collaboration among the outstanding undergraduate students of the mainland universities and enhancing interaction between mainland and UM students. In addition, they had an insight into the academic development and research achievements of UM that opened up new possibilities for their upcoming postgraduate studies.
