In his opening speech, College Master, Prof. Thompson stated that the college seeks to alleviate some of life’s stresses through providing support, celebrating student success, of course, and consoling them in those moments of need, those moments of Uhtceare, when anxiety is experienced just before dawn when one is not fully awake, and those moments when one awakes too early and cannot go back to sleep, no matter how tired one is because of worrying about the day to come. This special High Table marks a celebration of UM, a moment of good cheer and but a snapshot of just some of the College’s endeavours: work in progress and in performance.
The college also welcomed Prof. Billy So, Vice-Rector of Student Affairs (VRSA), Prof. Priscilla Roberts, Faculty of Business, City University of Macau and Joe Liu, Director, Macau Pass & MOME Macau who delivered keynote speeches.
The first musical performance by Collegium MCM was Ren Guang: Silver Cloud Chasing Moon. This was followed by the college’s Dance Troupe, which performed a hip-hop dance choreographed to K-Pop music, with intricate footwork, and a faster tempo. The second musical performance was Beethoven: Violin Sonata Op. 24 No. 5 in F Major, Spring Sonata (Frühlingssonate) I. Allegro, featuring Freshman violinist Henry Che, and Dr. Peggy Lau on Piano.
The highlight of the evening marked the highly coveted and prestigious presentation of ‘Oxbridge Blues’ that are awarded to top-performing students excelling within their chosen fields: sporting prowess; charitable work and service to music and the arts; and also completing the Unified Sports Partner Programme.
High Table 2021 was truly a memorable ‘town and gown’ event for everyone and a special vote of thanks must be conveyed to Messrs. Eddie Lam, (Chairman) Macau Vintage Vehicle Culture Association, Sam Kuan, Austin Chong, and Patrick Castro for exhibiting two British classic cars of prestige in every sense of the word: Austin-Healey Sprite MKII (1964) and MG Midget. |
