UM English Public Speaking Team emerged as quarter-finalists of 2019 Asian English Olympics

The Asian English Olympics Competition was established in 2012, with more than 650 students from 11 countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia participated in the competition this year. Judged by the experts of each field from all over Asia, participants competed in one of the eight fields of competitions, including Debate, Speech, Storytelling, Newscasting, Spelling Bee, Scrabble, Short Story Writing and Radio Drama. There were 7 rounds in the 5-days Tournament.

The University of Macau (UM) English Public Speaking Team successfully advanced to quarter final rounds at the 8th Asian English Olympics (AEO) held at BINUS University in Jakarta, Indonesia. Liang Xiao Jing, Captain of UM English Public Speaking Team, a third-year undergraduate student from the Faculty of Social Science (FSS) and a member of Shiu Pong College (SPC) and Nazaré Alva Galang Cabarrabang, a second-year undergraduate student from the Faculty of Health Science (FHS) and a member of Chao Kuang Piu College (CKPC) also made it into the quarter-final round in this tournament. Dai Yin Hang, a second-year undergraduate student from the FSS and a member of SPC, as well as Choi Sok Wa, a first-year undergraduate student from the Faculty of Education (FED) and a member of Cheong Kun Lun College (CKLC) made their debut in the preliminaries. All of them had exceptional performance and were very close in entering the next rounds.

Among them, Nazaré Alva Galang Cabarrabang, who participated in the speech contest, ranked in the top 30 among 109 outstanding speakers, and ranked in the top 20 after entering the quarterfinal. Liang Xiao Jing, who participated in the English newscasting contest, ranked in the top 20 among 60 competitors, and successfully advanced to the quarterfinals, ranked 11th.
