MCM College: Student Leadership Orientation 2019/2020

Moon Chun Memorial College held its sixth orientation which began on 7th August and ended on 9th August, 2019, for its newly appointed group of Resident Tutors (RTs), Resident Assistants(RAs) and House Association Executives (HAs). The College’s signature Student Leadership Orientation Programme is designed to create strong team spirit and leadership qualities among student leaders who undergo intensive training as role models, exercising responsibility for both incoming freshmen and returning upper classmen. On 7th August, student leader groups across Colleges gathered at the Anthony Lau Auditorium (E4-G078) at 10:00 a.m. with opening remark by Prof. Billy (Vice-Rector of Student Affairs). After this session, the team headed to Healthy Life Education Centre for team-building through a series of low-structure challenge network activities. The highlight of the activities was Tension Traverse which challenged individual’s balancing ability and the team’s team spirit. Through this activity, the team realized that they can achieve more together if everyone try their best.

On 8th August, the morning session began with MCM College Master, Prof. Kevin Thompson briefing the students about embodying and embracing one’s leadership skills. Afterwards, the resident fellows held intensive meeting with the student leaders and discussed about future plans for this year. In the afternoon session, the resident fellow led a workshop and created a comfortable space for student leaders to understand each other more, reflect on their give-and-take concept of the team and explored the team’s core values. At the end, the team declared that they are committed to create a team full of responsibility, mutual respect and passion.

On 9th August, a workshop for basic counselling skills were offered by SAO staff at Fellows’ Salon in W11-G024. This was followed by a talk offered by MCMC office team regarding office procedures and guidelines for freshmen and returning students. At the end of the day, the team played their team spirit and worked together efficiently to set-up venue for new students mass move-in the next day. After the three-days student leadership orientation programme, the participants showed their appreciation for this great arrangement and would like to share their experiences during the team-building sessions. Below are their feedbacks:
“Through this team building process, we realized the importance of building team core values. A team should be based on each member’s core values, it seeks common ground while reserving differences and constant improvement. We are committed to adhere to responsibility, mutual respect and passion as our team core values and put them into practice this year.” - Benson Lin (HA President)

“I think that the most important thing in a team is mutual trust and reliance. My greatest feeling is that each individual in the team has unique ability and deserve team members’ trust and reliance. MCMC’s team is unique and harmonious. In this team, everyone has an opportunity to shine without fearing of losing oneself or not being accepted.” - Quinn Song (RT)

“My most impressive team building activity is the “Who Am I ?” sharing session. I think that we all know each other but actually we don’t know each other well enough. This time, I’m glad to have this great opportunity to know new RTs and understand other RAs in a deeper level.” - Ka Chon (RA)

“These two days, I was very impressed by the word, “Responsibility”. A team was formed by each individual and the team ‘s common goal will only be achieved when each individual finish their own task with great responsibility. I believe that we will become a passionate, pro-active and responsible team.” - Yuan (RT)

“Right after we finished the first get-to-know each other game, I felt that there was a bond among us, connecting each one of us. The series of team building activities were challenging as they required a lot of cooperation skills from us. At last, we were glad to complete all the challenges as a team and accomplished our common goals through effective communication and mutual trust.” - Iris Lam (RA)
