MCM College: “No One Left Behind” Student Leadership Training Day Camp

In the new academic year, MCM College has newly recruited a group of student leaders, including Resident Tutors (RTs), Resident Assistants (RAs) and House Association Executives (HAs). To help them build a strong and effective team, MCM College organized a student leadership training day camp in collaboration with Macau Teen Challenge on 29 August, 2020. This was a survivor style adventure activity. The imaginary scenario was that the cruise ship struck an iceberg and began to sink. All passengers must escape immediately but there were not enough lifeboats. Based on this scenario setting, the trainers required the participants to complete a range of team building challenge tasks that were designed to encourage team spirit, communication and cooperation. The challenge of the team was to complete the given tasks, leaving no one behind. Through this experiential learning activity, most participants realised the importance of teamwork in reaching a common goal. The overall feedback of this activity was very positive, 100% participants expressed in the activity feedback form that the activity was good or above. Below is some participants’ feedback:

“This activity let me really feel the importance of teamwork. When seemingly impossible tasks were put before us, we didn't give up. Instead, it inspired the strength of our team spirit to overcome various difficulties and successfully complete the challenge. This is the result of the joint efforts of everyone, getting the whole team closer together.” – Jennifer Lu (HA)

"What this activity inspires me most is that a great team has a deep and meaningful impact on each member. While receiving kindness from other team members, I share my gentleness with them. Everyone is a mirror to me, helping me to become more understanding and open-minded." – Shirley Ni (RA)

“This activity let us experience the importance of cooperation. In the activity, everyone displayed their respective advantages, finished individual task, accomplished the mission impossible and experienced the great power of team.” – Zhou Zheng (RT)

“During the ice-breaking session, we tried five rounds of number touching game. As the difficulty of the game increased, the difficulty of cooperation had also increased, especially in the last two rounds, four team members were required to play the game with the blindfolds. According to the bucket theory, our team was facing a shortage at this point. For this shortage, we realised we should make up for team member’s limitation in order to improve the overall performance of the team. We can also reduce the workload of disadvantaged team members to improve their efficiency and maximize the synergy of the team.” - Lyn Wei (RA)
