Big Data expert MEI Hong gives a talk on Big Data and Digital Economy

The University of Macau (UM) today (16 Nov) held a lecture on Big Data and Digital Economy, delivered by Academician MEI Hong, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Mei analyzed the enormous value of big data and its application, and introduced the development of digital economy. Attendees included the students of the first intake of the Leadership Training Program for Civil Servants jointly organized by UM and SAFP, officials and senior technicians in the relevant fields, and the teachers and students of the Master of Science (Data Science) program of UM.

In the welcome speech, Vice Rector (Research), Prof. Wei Ge introduced the background information about UM’s first interdisciplinary programme in big data launched last year, and the Leadership Training Program for Civil Servants jointly organized by UM and SAFP which is oriented towards the public administration reform in the context of e-governance development. The Vice Rector believed that Mei’s lecture will bring new perspectives and inspire the participants to help develop e-governance with new ideas and cutting-edge technology, and subsequently strive for better involvement in the greater bay development with greater competiveness.

Mei also serves as member of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries, foreign academician of Academia Europaea, fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and president of China Computer Federation. He has mainly engaged in the research of software engineering and system software, making outstanding achievements in component-based middleware, development methodology and tool environment.

During the lecture Mei talked about the essence and nature of big data; the significance of big data with reference made to successful examples of its application; the characteristics of current application; and the new phase of informationisation arising from big data, and an emerging economy, namely digital economy. He also briefly introduced the past and the present of big data development, and shared his insights facing the challenges that big data poses to the industries and the society development.

The lecture was organized by the Public Administration Training Centre of UM. In the Q&A session, the participants raised questions about data sharing and openness, big data’s value to be played in its application, and development and application of 5G technology in China, etc. Rector, Prof. Yonghua Song delivered a closing speech and expressed gratitude to SAFP for its support in the organization of the lecture and to the officials from different government departments for their participation.
