The first High Table Dinner of Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC), Academic Year 2019/2020, was held on 23rd October, 2020. The theme of the evening is psychological well-being during the pandemic. The event began with opening remarks by MLC Interim College Master, Prof. Katrine Wong. Prof. Wong noted that under the global pandemic, everyone's lives have been unprecedentedly affected, and various changes have taken place in studies and lifestyle of students at the University. Prof. Wong raised a question closely related to the theme of the dinner: “How do we maintain a positive attitude to meet challenges and new opportunities?”

MLC was delighted to have invited two experts in psychological health and well-being from our University to join the evening as keynote speakers for the dinner. The first keynote speaker was Prof. Kay Chang from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences. Her speech focused on distress and fear related to COVID-19. Prof. Chang pointed out that in the face of numerous uncertainties and new practices, anxiety and fear were normal reactions from human beings as protection. She encouraged students to understand these psychological changes, learn to live with them and eventually overcome fear and embrace hope.

Mr. Elvo Sou, Head of the Student Counselling Section of the Student Affairs Office, gave a talk on living a meaningful university life. Mr. Sou encouraged students to help each and maintain a positive attitude when facing various difficulties caused by the pandemic. He also encouraged students to make full use of the resources at the University and the RC to enhance their abilities, to seek meaningful goals in life and to live a full and meaningful life.

During the dinner, three sets of wonderful musical performances by 1st year students added much glamour to the dinner and were well received by the audience.

Guests and students that attended the dinner strictly complied with Macao Government’s and the University's pandemic prevention measures, including wearing masks at appropriate times and maintaining social distance.

Among the guests at the dinner were Dr. Irina Ma, representative of MLC’s donor family; Prof. Rui Paulo da Silva Martins, Vice Rector (Global Affairs); Prof. Billy So, Vice Rector (Student Affairs), Prof. Xu Jie, Interim Dean of Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Interim Director of Confucius Institute; Prof. Jean Chen, Dean of Faculty of Business Administration; Prof. Janny Leung, College Master of Choi Kai Yau College; Mr. Paul Pang, Dean of Students, Student Affairs Office, and Ms. Monica Lou, Principal of the Affiliated School of the University of Macau.
