UM Public Speaking Team Invited Outstanding Speaker
for 2020 Summer Online Workshops
UM’s Public Speaking Team recently had the pleasure of inviting an experienced and outstanding speaker - Ms. Chen Jiehao for the summer online workshops. She was the champion of 17th China Daily “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition and the global first runner-up of International Public Speaking Competition 2012 (IPSC2012).
The summer workshops focused on the problems and weakness of our speakers, providing them with corresponding solutions, as well as listing and discussing about what makes an excellent speech. The students made brief self-introduction in turns, based on which the coach gave out suggestions for improvement and useful techniques. And with the efforts of all, the important features of a speech were perfectly concluded. To combine learning with practice, brainstorming and time controlling exercise were also included.
Throughout the whole training filled with free ideas and humor, Every team member actively participated in finding out and breaking though their own difficulties. Coach Chen made visualized examples in the discussion, and her points of “Express feelings and opinions from the audience’s view” and “Think about the other side before you pick one side and list your reasons” impressed everyone. She also emphasized the importance of being confident and unique while speaking.
After the summer workshops, all the speakers have a better understanding about further improvement to be made. They also learned how to develop impromptu speaking skills and adjust content according to time limitation. Making full use of these precious experiences, we strongly believe that all the speakers will shine on stage in the future!
