Dear All,

Patents contain rich information of innovative research and technology. Through the patent analysis, researchers can grasp the latest technology development trends, discover innovative research topics, and avoid patent infringement. In order to support UM’s research and collaborative innovation, the Library has launched the Patent Information Service (PIS) and provides the following services to current UM academic and research staff:

1. Patent Retrieval Service
This service is mainly to assist researchers to identify the novelty of a specific technology before patent application. Through this service, researchers can fully grasp the situation of relevant technologies, avoid patent infringement, and improve the success rate of patent applications. Based on the information and requirements provided by the requester, a search of relevant patents and patent applications will be performed by the Library’s PIS Team, and search results will be analyzed and summarized in a statistical report.

2. Patent Alert Service
This service is mainly to assist researchers to achieve the latest information for the development of a specific technology or patent. Through this service, researchers can trace the latest technology development and timely adjust their research planning. Based on the information and requirements provided by the requester, a regular search of relevant patents and patent applications will be performed by the Library’s PIS Team, and notification will be sent to the requester for any new patent applications and the updates of legal status of existing patents.

3. Patent Analysis Service
This service is mainly to assist researchers to grasp the development trends of a specific technology and relevant industry in an all-round way, and to explore relevant core technologies, hotspot technologies, technology gaps, and identify key inventors, organizations and stakeholders. Based on the information and requirements provided by the requester, a search of relevant patents and patent applications will be performed by the Library’s PIS Team, then an analysis of patent contents will be conducted in conjunction with relevant technical and industrial information. All analyzed results will be concluded in a report.

4. Patent Literacy Education
The Library regularly organizes patent literacy workshops in order to enhance UM members’ patent retrieval and analysis skills. The Library has also created guides introducing the use of patent databases and the patent application processes, as well as the instructions for reading patent documents.
