Moon Chun Memorial College: Experiencing Cantonese Opera

Cantonese opera, also known as Guangdong opera, was originated from the mainstream Guangdong opera of Nanxi during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. Appearing in Guangdong and Guangxi, it is a kind of performing art that includes singing, acting, music, staging and costumes.

Cantonese opera was listed in the first batch of 518 national intangible cultural heritage on May 20, 2006. On September 30, 2009, it was listed as one of the human intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Cantonese opera is a treasurable form of art in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. With the emigration of Chinese people, Cantonese opera has been spread to various places.

To understand the cultural value of Cantonese opera, MCM College took a group of students to experience the makeup, costumes and body languages of Cantonese opera, and also listen to some excerpts of well-known tunes.
