Puppet and Object Theatre Festival in Coloane
The 19th Macao City Fringe Festival, organized by Cultural Affairs Bureau, themed on “Boundless creation will show you around!”, will present a series of extraordinary programmes and outreach activities. As one of the performing groups, Rolling Puppet Alternative Theatre will for the first time curate the “Puppet and Object Theatre Festival in Coloane”at Macau Flying Eagle Training Centre, which will feature three contemporary puppet theatre productions, presented by artists from Macau, Taiwan and Canada in different styles, as well as extension workshops. The performances will be presented on 11, 12, 18 and 19 November, each of which will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions. As one of subthemes of the 19th Macao City Fringe Frestival “Crème de la Fringe”, “Puppet and Object Theatre Festival in Coloane” will feature puppet and object performances in various innovative forms. With the power of Eastern and Western visual theatre, the performances will incorporate lighting, sound art, multimedia puppets and local original stories. In the festival, Canadian theatre group Macromatter, whose unique pursuit in visual aesthetics coupled with its cross-disciplinary approach has resulted in productions of aesthetic beauty tinged with childish innocence, will present the fantastical and poetic Fragile; Uncertain Studio from Taiwan will present Nightwalk: Pourquoi? The performance, which is accompanied by surreal visuals produced by installations and objects and the 4-channel recording of environmental sounds, immerses the audience in a stream-of-consciousness narrative at an urban nighttime; the local Rolling Puppet Alternative Theatre will showcase Story Market, which is the achievement of “Puppet and Object Theatre Workshop Series”. In this market, audience can one by one opt to peek into the stories hidden in the story-boxes.
In addition, there will be an extension workshop related to each performance, namely “Creating with Objects Workshop”, “Every Object Hides a Story: Object Theatre Workshop “and “Hello Grown-ups! Hello kids! Storytelling with Magic Box Workshop”.
Rolling Puppet Alternative Theatre has resided Coloane Art Space for nearly two years. Ever since they became the neighbours of Coloane, they have gradually attracted by the strong bonds in the small neightbourhood, the atmosphere of the allays and the natural views. As a result, the idea of curating an arts festival came to their minds; thus, the inception of “Puppet and Object Theatre Festival in Coloane”. In puppet and object theatre, “puppets” are the mimesis of nature and animals, “objects”come from the daily lives of urban citizens, and theatre presents their meanings. Community, the art of puppetry and people bump into each other in no times, changing and enriching each other’s lives. “Puppet and Object Theatre Festival in Coloane”gives the outer island so much cultural liveliness, preparing it to be a brand new art spot.
