After the launch of the "Macao Autonomous Driving Bus Testing Platform", the first autonomous driving intensive course held by the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) came to its end today (30th). FST has been committed to developing talents for the collaborative intelligent autonomous driving platform and experimental base of the autonomous driving group in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. This intensive course on Connected and Autonomous Driving lasted for 2 weeks and was organized by FST, State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City (SKL-IoTSC), and Institute of Collaborative Innovation. Due to the overwhelming response and space limit, a total of 75 students were selected, of which 25 participated through online platform. FST will continue to organize relative courses and seminars in the near future, so as to cultivate the new generation in the field of autonomous driving and provide a solid foundation for the future development of the industry.

Intelligent transport represents the future of the automotive industry, in order to meet the demand of relevant talents, FST has specially organise this course to build up students' understanding regarding the collaborative intelligent autonomous driving platform. The field of autonomous driving covers a wide range of areas, therefore, a number of professional scholars, including Professor Xu Cheng-Zhong, the Dean of FST, Prof Zhou Jiantao, Prof U Leong Hou, Prof Wu Yuan and Prof Kou Kun Pang who are Associate Professors of FST and SKL-IoTSC, Li Zhenning and Chan Hou Pong, Research Fellows of the University of Macau (UM), and Professor Kong Hui of Nanjing University of Science and Technology. Also, Liu Yandong from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Xiao Zehe, Research Assistant of UM, are responsible for the experimental guidance. The learning content is comprehensive and practical, including the introduction of core technologies of autonomous driving, V2X communication and edge computing for connected vehicles, modeling and analysis of hybrid human/autonomous driving, as well as data and knowledge fusion for connected and autonomous driving. Except for the lectures taught by the knowledgeable scholars, the experimental courses provided by the course offer students an opportunity to strengthen their learning. Students are required to form groups to complete various algorithm codes, debug sensors, develop and implement autonomous driving in Carla simulation scenarios and Baidu Apollo. The theory and practice were successfully integrated into the intensive course. The course was running simultaneously in face-to-face classes and online classes which can become an important and valuable experience for the teaching of autonomous driving courses in the future.

At the closing ceremony of the intensive course, students from each group showed their experimental results on stage. Among the students is a science teacher from Pui Ching Middle School (Macau). Associate Dean (Academic Affairs) and all Department Heads of FST came to witness the students' learning achievements and present certificates to them. As an inevitable trend of the future development of the automotive industry, the development of autonomous vehicle technology has become a global trend. UM will continue to shoulder the responsibility for cultivating scientific talents and accelerating the development of a new generation of intelligent autonomous driving.
