UM explores industry-academia collaboration with chip design companies in Zhuhai

Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute (ZUMRI) and Zhuhai Bureau for Industrialisation and Informationalisation jointly organised an event to promote collaboration and exchange between ZUMRI and major chip design companies in Zhuhai. The event attracted nearly 100 participants, including managerial and technical personnel from over 30 chip design companies in Zhuhai, as well as representatives of organisations providing technology transfer services. During the event, participants exchanged ideas with experts and scholars from UM’s Institute of Microelectronics on how to speed up chip research and development (R&D) in Zhuhai and Macao.

Fu Zhi, deputy director of Zhuhai Bureau for Industrialisation and Informationalisation, and Zhang Ge, director of the Bureau of Commerce in Hengqin New District, attended the event and delivered speeches. Both Fu and Zhang have high hopes for collaborations in scientific and technological innovation between Macao and Zhuhai, especially in the field of chip design. They look forward to the establishment of a mechanism for long-term cooperation between schools and businesses in Macao and Zhuhai, which they hope will help enhance the R&D capacity of Zhuhai and Macao in integrated circuits and create an industry cluster. In the future, Hengqin will actively foster an environment conducive to industrial development in order to support mid- and high-end chip design companies throughout the R&D cycle. It will also vigorously develop the integrated circuit design industry, and work with Macao to establish a high-tech innovation platform in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

During the event, scholars from UM’s Institute of Microelectronics, including Prof Elvis Mak Pui In, associate director of the State-Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI; as well as Prof Lu Yan and Prof Huang Mo, exchanged ideas with participants on chip design and R&D and strategies for attracting new talent.
