University of Macau Cantonese Debating Team organized a workshop held by Victor Gu - "Malaysian Best Debater"
University of Macau Cantonese Debating Team held debate workshops on 27 and 28 July 2020. Mr. Victor Gu, a prominent Malaysian debater, was invited to share his debating experience in this workshop. In response to the government's policy during pandemic, the workshop was conducted on "zoom" for members to exchange debating skills.
Through one on one interaction, Mr. Gu helped students to explore and understand their own problems in debate and gave feasible suggestions to seek breakthroughs. In addition, he shared his own views and analysis in regards to debate. There are different ways to deal with different kinds of debates. For policy motions, Mr. Gu proposed four factors of consideration: essence, pattern, trend and trade-off. Through practical examples and theories, students can further master the essentials.
At the end of the workshop, Mr. Victor Gu shared his own experience. He pointed out the different perspectives one holds as a judge and debater, such as the perspective of examination, requirements etc. He taught debaters how to make use of the preparation period and how to strive for excellence in competition.
It is hoped that through this activity, it can arouse students' interest in debate, and more importantly, students can acquire useful skills and knowledge. University of Macau will continue to carry out similar online activities, aiming to keep students in a learning state and to provide a platform for communication between teachers and students amidst the pandemic.
