UM won 2nd Prize in “21st Century” National English Speaking Competition

October 2020, after a few months of waiting, the 18th China Daily “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition Semi-final/Finals will finally be held in Guangzhou. The competitors participating in the Semi-final/Final are outstanding speakers chosen from a total of 900,000 contenders from more than 30 provinces, and the representative of University of Macau this year was able to stand out from the fierce competition and win the 2nd Prize.

Representing our university was Wan Yingjia, a fourth-year student from the Faculty of Education and Cheong Kun Lun College. After the competition, she reflected, “This competition made me realize once again the large gap between my abilities and those of top public speakers, especially in terms of speech conception and delivery. I have gained a lot from this experience. Before the competition, I had repeatedly reviewed and changed my script, but when I listened to the different perspectives given by other speakers, I felt a sense of enlightenment, that learning is a life-long activity.”

"This is also the first time for me to participate in an online speech contest held through video meetings. From submission of materials, contestants' videos, competitions, and awards, everything is carried out online. During the speech, my video screen will be projected to the Beijing competition venue. On the big screen at the scene, the judges and the audience will be watching my delivery, and this mode of competition combined virtual and reality with technology very well. It was because of such arrangements that a national event can be held smoothly, so that our students from Hong Kong and Macao can participate in the national event without leaving home. The success of this competition can act as an encouraging example for similar competitions that may be held in the future."
