UM Online English Speech Contest Focuses On Recent COVID-19 Situation

On 21st April and 28th April, 2020, two rounds of online speech competitions were successfully organized by the University of Macau Public Speaking Team. This is the another activity of Public Speaking Team since the online training was held during class suspension period.

This contest focused on discussing current social issues, epidemic situation, and related social topics. The purpose of it is to make team members care about the current situation, exchange views on the impact of the epidemic on individuals and society, and maintain good training status. Despite not in the same place, everyone actively participated in the online training, freely expressed their views, and gave very inspiring speeches throughout the process.

There were two rounds in the contest. In the first round, team members were randomly assigned different speech topics related to the epidemic and prepared an impromptu speech in 10 minutes. All the students and coaches voted for the Top 3 to enter the second round. In the second round, each of the Top 3 contestants gave a speech on the imaginative theme “If you are the CEO of a poor country, how would you plan to successfully pass through this epidemic period”. Evaluation is based on the speech performances and the contestants’ response to other students' questions. In the end, Valerie, a second year student from the faculty of education, Cheong Kun Lun College and Tong Tong, a first year student from the faculty of Business Administration, Lui Chi Woo College won the first and second places respectively.

This special online activity is closely integrated with the concept of "Keep Learning Amid Class Suspension", which not only enables team members to have a deep understanding of the epidemic from different perspectives, but also provides a valuable opportunity for students to continue learning and exchanging ideas. The experience of online activities is novel and interesting. The geographical distance does not make students feel alienated or get slack on learning, but has increased the enthusiasm for expression and listening to different thinking. Our Coaches, Miss ILAGAN, NATACHA ABENA and Ms. Zhang Yixin, and all the team members said that this online training will become the most special and meaningful experience in their memories. As the saying goes, “Stay at home but with a heart of world”, the UM Public Speaking Team will hold more exciting activities with the hope and concern towards the epidemic situation, so that students can maintain their best state in learning and public speaking, waiting for their returns for class resumption to school.
